OUR STORY

Hi, I’m Bertie!

Here’s a little story about how my hair braid empire began — in case you were wondering!

It all started one sunny summer here in Devon. Each year I'd trade at a local craft market, selling jewellery and also the popular holiday tradition - the hair braid! I’d create colourful hair wraps using cotton and silk threads for happy holidaymakers, wrapping the threads around the hair there and then. The response was amazing — so amazing, in fact, that I could hardly keep up! I’d often have a long queue of excited little girls waiting patiently in the heat while I worked on each unique design.

That’s when I realised there had to be a quicker, easier way to bring these joyful braids to everyone — without the wait. So, I set out to design ready-made hair wraps that could be applied in minutes. After years of experimenting, creating, and perfecting the process, I finally did it!

With my background in jewellery design and my qualifications as both a hairdresser and hair extensionist, I had the perfect mix of creativity and technical know-how to bring my vision to life. And just like that, Bertie’s Braids was born!

Each braid is applied using a similar technique to micro ring hair extensions, making them secure, stylish, and super easy to wear.

I love designing every single braid and giving each one its own name — inspired by the seasons, colours, and current trends.

But most importantly, I want everyone to feel that braids are for them — no matter their age! Over the years, so many lovely ladies at my markets told me they wished they could have one too, but felt they were “too old.” Well, at Bertie’s Braids, we say nonsense!

Our mission is to give everyone — from little girls & boys to grown women and men — permission to embrace their inner sparkle. So go ahead, wear your Bertie’s Braid proudly and let your playful side shine!

Application

1.    Thread the wire loop through the tube at the top of the hair braid and put to one side.

2.    Pick up the tail comb and section about a 1cm size amount of hair. Be sure that you have a clean section; you should  be able to see that your section is a clean square shape.

3.     Pick up the braid and put the sectioned hair through the wire loop. Next, while holding the metal tube (at the top of the hair braid) with one hand, pull the loop downwards with the other. The hair will be pulled through the tube along with the wire loop. Now put the wire loop to one side, while still holding the braid in place.

4.      Slide the braid up toward the scalp. Keep the thread on the outside to avoid visibility on the metal tube (This will give the illusion of the traditional hair wrap). Leave 1cm of hair at the root for wriggle room, otherwise it may cause               discomfort.

5.      Using the pliers, press down the metal tube at the top of the hair braid to secure onto the hair. Press down hard to make sure it is in securely.

It's as easy as that, your hair braid  is in!

See our video below for a full tutorial on how to install your braid.

Removal

Use pliers that have serrated grip, you wont get the grip needed with smooth nose pliers. Simply push the metal tube in the opposite direction that it was put in. This will open the metal tube slightly and the braid can gently be pulled out. Please take a look at our tool section for our special Berties braids pliers. Tips

A tip to help you pull the hair through the tube using your wire loop.

It is important to use enough hair when applying your hair braid to avoid discomfort. However some people have found it hard to pull a 1cm square of hair through the tube, so here's a tip -

  • Slide the braid half way down the hair just before pulling the wire loop through. Everyone's hair is more sparse in the middle of the hair or toward the ends, this will make it possible for you to pull that section of hair through the metal tube.
